COMMUNITY

Inspired by historical lineages and the tenacious creativity of traditional artists, Deborah Valoma has developed a keen interest in the continuity of culture through aesthetic practices and community building—both in the visual and performance arts. She is interested in the line between the perpetuation and performance of culture, the contested ideologies of “authenticity,” and the politically charged arena of cultural appropriation. Her professional involvement in community arts has in the past included work with traditional artists, service on advisory councils and non-profit boards of directors, and participation in projects that forward traditional arts.
